English I Hero Paper 2014-2015
This pathfinder will be useful in finding information about the lives of people you believe are heroes. Keep in mind your list of heroic qualities—you will be looking for examples of those qualities in the life and actions of the hero you are researching.
Books
Search the online catalog linked above for specific books about your hero or the event associated with your hero. Use the index in the back of the book to find the specific pages within the book related to your qualities.
Databases (use the West High School Resources website)
Search your hero’s name here. Video and articles are available. You may also click to hear the text or have it translated into Spanish. Citation information available by clicking the citation link.
Click the link above. This is a database that the middle schools have, but it works great for this paper (same password). It gives you a list of people and categorizes them so it’s easy to search for potential heroes. Citation information is at the bottom of the page.
Web Pages
Their mission is to “bring students face-to-face with the extraordinary leaders, the visionaries, and the pioneers who have helped shape our world.” This is an awesome source with tons of great people to choose. Click on the “achiever gallery” in the left corner for a list of people. You can search by topics (they divided the people into 5 topics). Click on the “view all” so you get a more comprehensive list (otherwise it just gives you a sample of people).
From the Biography Channel, this is a great first-stop resource to get an overview of your hero.
TIME has profiled those individuals who — for better or worse — most influenced the last 100 years. Be careful here, not everyone is by definition a hero.
